The Top End includes many well-known and magical national parks such as Kakadu, Arnhemland, Litchfield, Katherine and many other world-class wilderness areas in between. But the region not only offers a stunning natural scenery and adventure country, the culture and history of the Aboriginal people who have lived here for thousands of years add another intriguing and interesting facet to your holiday in Australia’s Top End. The climate makes it best to travel from April to early November, but many parts of the far North can be discovered year round. Northern Territory – You won’t know if you don’t go!

NOTE: An good level of fitness and hiking boots are required for this tour. Should seasonal conditions not permit a visit to Jim Jim Falls or Twin Falls, it will be replaced with alternate touring. Children under 4 years of age are not permitted on this tour.

DAY 1

Kakadu National Park, Ubirr Art Site, East Alligator River Cruise
Today enter stunning World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park, travel by 4WD to Ubirr to see superbly preserved Aboriginal rock art. Located on the Arnhem Land escarpment, Ubirr has been added in its own right to the World Heritage List because of its anthropological and archaeological value. After lunch join the Guluyambi Cultural Cruise along the East Alligator River with an Aboriginal guide. This wonderfully scenic cruise is a great introduction to the Aboriginal cultural context of the Territory. Watch for a variety of wildlife, including crocodiles. Learn about the ancient culture and legends of the region. With special permission from the local custodians, disembark on the Arnhem Land side of the river for a short walk into Arnhem Land. Enjoy the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in ancient Aboriginal culture during a display of traditional hunting and gathering techniques and implements.

DAY 2

Jim Jim Falls, Twin Falls, Kakadu
Travel by 4WD to the edge of the Arnhem Land escarpment and beautiful Jim Jim Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in the park. Enjoy a bushwalk through monsoonal forest surrounded by towering cliffs. Continue along the winding sand track to Twin Falls Gorge where there is time to explore. [L]

DAY 3

Arnhem Land by 4WD
Journey across the East Alligator River into Arnhem Land. Aboriginal-owned, Arnhem Land is one of Australia’s most remote and least traversed regions. With special permission from the Manilakarr people, travel to the rarely visited Mikinj Valley, visit places inaccessible to most, including ancient rock art sites. Gain knowledge of traditional land ownership, bush skills, hunting, food gathering and bush tucker preparation. Meet aboriginal artists at Injalak Arts and Crafts Centre in Oenpelli. View Aboriginal art in its natural state, you will experience the region's world-famous landscapes consisting of sandstone outcrops, escarpment, forests, floodplains and billabongs. Late this afternoon re-board the coach and return to Darwin where your day’s touring concludes at 20 PM. [L]

• Injalak Arts and Craft Association is visited only on weekdays. Injalak is not open weekends and public holidays and may be closed for cultural reasons. If Injalak is closed you will visit Cannon Hill and Hawk Dreaming in Kakadu instead. This alternative also applies when seasonal flooding and tides prevent crossing the East Alligator River.
