A truly extraordinary journey between Adelaide and Brisbane via Melbourne is the newest experience in Australian long distance train journeys and your very own opportunity to explore new landscapes in the comfort of this beautiful train. Called The Southern Spirit, this service has been named to encapsulate the spirit of adventure held in the hearts of those who first opened up the furthest reaches of the Australian continent and its vast inland areas.

Covering four states, The Southern Spirit takes you through the hidden beauty of the Great Dividing Range and the Eastern seaboard. Enjoy the privacy of your “Gold” or “Platinum Service” cabin and watch the landscape change before your eyes as you delight in the service and catch up with fellow travellers in the onboard “Queen Adelaide Restaurant” and “Outback Explorer Lounge”.

Take advantage of Whistle Stop Tours of the majestic Grampians National Park in Victoria, Albury - Wodonga on the mighty Murray River, the open range Western Plains Zoo, flavours of the Hunter Valley wine growing region, the historic seaside town of Port Macquarie and beautiful, iconic Byron Bay. All Whistle Stop Tours are included in your fare and come with transfers directly to and from The Southern Spirit.

Brisbane to Melbourne / Adelaide

Day 1 – Friday [ L / D ]
Brisbane and Byron Bay

Board The Southern Spirit in Brisbane and begin your unforgettable rail journey southward. Experience a “Whistle Stop Tour” to the small coastal village of Byron Bay, the most easterly point on the Australian mainland. See the laid back atmosphere, pristine beaches and take your time to enjoy the Main Street on your own. Rejoin The Southern Spirit in the northern New South Wales town of Casino, approximately 80 km South-West of Byron Bay. [LD]

Day 2 – Saturday [ B / L / D ]
Port Macquarie

Today, enjoy another “Whistle Stop Tour” in the historic coastal town of Port Macquarie. Take the opportunity to explore this peaceful settlement that is surrounded by green fields and grazing country. Experience New South Wales’ mid north coast on your way south while enjoying a delicious three course meal in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant with new found friends.

Day 3 – Sunday [ B / L / D ]
Hunter Valley

Start the day with a heart breakfast on board as you travel to the scenic Hunter Valley, one of Australia’s premier wine growing areas. Join your “Whistle Stop Tour” here and experience the tastes of the region as you explore the many highlights. After the delights of the Hunter Valley, rejoin The Southern Spirit and have the chance to chat and share your stories with your fellow travellers.

Day 4 – Monday [ B / L / D ]
Dubbo

Contemplate the changing landscapes passing by on the path less travelled as you continue towards Dubbo, nestled in the heart of New South Wales’ Central Western Plains. Here, enjoy the chance to experience a “Whistle Stop Tour” to Taronga Western Plains Zoo, one of the world’s finest open range sanctuaries and a vital link in national and international breeding programs for rare and endangered species.

Day 5 – Tuesday [ B / L / D ]
Albury-Wodonga and Melbourne

Continuing southward along The Great Dividing Range, the day’s first stop is the twin cities of Albury-Wodonga on the Murray River. Take part in another “Whistle Stop Tour” before rejoining The Southern Spirit and proceeding on to the state capital of Victoria - Melbourne. For those continuing their journey to Adelaide take the opportunity to leave the train and take in the sights and delights of Southbank or Melbourne City. Reboard The Southern Spirit and head west towards Stawell.

Day 6 – Wednesday [ B / L / D ]
The Grampians and Adelaide

Your final day on board The Southern Spirit begins with the last “Whistle Stop Tour” in the picturesque Grampians region in Western Victoria. Reboard the train as it winds across the plain, bidding farewell to your fellow travelling companions over lunch as “The Southern Spirit” reaches its final destination, Australia’s wine capital Adelaide.

Grampians
Depart The Southern Spirit and join your coach to commence the tour of the picturesque Grampians Region. Visit highlights including MacKenzie Falls, local Grampian's vantage points and Brambuk Cultural Centre.

Albury / Wodonga
Disembark from the The Southern Spirit in order to join your coach for an introductory tour of the twin cities of Albury / Wodonga. Cross the mighty Murray River and visit the original Ettamogah Pub, a quintessential piece of Australiana.

Dubbo
This tour will take you to the impressive Western Plains Zoo, that enjoys a very close co-operation with Sydney’s renowned Taronga Zoo. Western Plains Zoo is one of the world’s finest examples of open range sanctuaries and it represents a crucial link in the breeding programs for rare and endangered species.

Hunter Valley wine region
The Hunter Valley wine region was one of the first wine growing areas established in Australia and it is home to over 70 wineries, ranging from small boutique enterprises to the large multi nationals that produce on an industrial scale. This tour provides you with an excellent opportunity to sample some of the premium drops being produced in the Hunter and you will get to see a variety of other highlights that make this region three hours north of Sydney such a popular weekend destination. This tour includes the visit to the most impressive and delightful Hunter Valley Gardens as well as delicious lunch.

Port Macquarie
The town tour of Port Macquarie highlighting the rich history of this quaint mid northern New South Wales town. The city of 40,000 was first settled in 1821 and was founded as a penal settlement that was to replace Newcastle as a destination for convicts. Its mild climate and excellent ocean beaches not only make Port Macquarie a popular holiday destination, there is a growing population of retirees that leave the big cities for a quieter life in a costal community. See some of the cities historical buildings and visit “Ricardoes Tomatoes”, a large scale tomato and strawberry farm.

Byron Bay
Depart The Southern Spirit in Casino, approximately 80 km South-West of Byron Bay. See Australia’s most easterly point as you visit Cape Byron Lighthouse to take in unforgettable vistas over the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Take some time to wander through the main street of Byron Bay at your leisure and absorb the laid back atmosphere of this coastal town that has changed radically from being the ‘hippie town’ to becoming one of the most sought-after holiday resorts along the Eastern seabord. Later that day, return to Casino to rejoin The Southern Spirit.

Gold Service Sleeper Cabin

Gold Service is ideal for discerning guests who seek a great train adventure, but they also want to enjoy it in style and comfort. Guests choose from twin or single sleeper cabins. Complimentary toiletries and bath towels are provided in all Gold Sleeper Cabins. Guests dine in an elegant Restaurant Car. All meals are included in the Gold Service fare. Relax in the Lounge or socialise with new found friends. Travelling in a world famous trains with views across the vast Australian outback is a truly unforgettable experience.

During the day, these compact twin-berth sleeper cabins offer a comfortable three seater lounge. At night, they convert to an upper and lower sleeping berth at night. Your rail expedition will be made even more comfortable with service from the onboard hospitality steward, including fresh sheets, bath towels, pillows, doonas and complimentary toiletries. Twin-berth sleeper cabins have private ensuite facilities with a hide-away compact toilet, wash basin and shower.

Single berth sleeper cabins feature a comfortable lounge chair and foot rest by day and a single level comfortable bed comes night time. Single cabins are fitted with a wash basin; showers and toilets are located at either end of the Gold Service carriage.

Queen Adelaide Restaurant Car
Platinum and Gold Service guests dine in the classically styled “Queen Adelaide Restaurant Car” and enjoy mouth-watering dishes that the chefs prepare on board. Fresh, local ingredients and a balanced menu is their top priority. Each meal offers a choice of carefully prepared fine food and seasonal dishes can include Australian delicacies such as saltwater barramundi and grilled kangaroo fillet.

Gold Service fare includes hearty breakfasts, two course lunches and three course dinners. Vegetarian, children’s and limited special dietary meals are available when you make your booking; please advise MyAussieHoliday of any special dietary requirements at the time of booking.

The Outback Explorer Lounge
A short stroll from your sleeper carriage is club-like Outback Explorer Lounge. It often is the ‘social hub’ and centre of activity on the journey, the Outback Explorer Lounge is perfect for socialising with your fellow travellers from around the globe, relaxing, reading or just enjoying the picturesque scenery as you travel across this vast and stunningly beautiful continent.

Luggage
Due to cabin space constraints, it is recommended that guests take only an overnight bag containing all requirements for their journey in their cabin and check in excess luggage. Guests are permitted to check-in a maximum of 40 kg of luggage free of charge [two items not exceeding 20 kg per piece]. Please note that checked in luggage can not be accessed during your journey.
